Instructor-Led vs Self-Led Activities

At Frylands Wood, groups can enjoy activities in two different ways: Instructor-Led or Self-Led.

Both options offer great experiences in the outdoors, and the right choice will depend on your group, your schedule, and the type of activities you want to run.

Instructor-Led Activities

Instructor-led sessions are delivered by our trained activity instructors, who guide participants through each activity in a safe, structured and engaging way.

Our instructors provide all the equipment, explain how the activity works, and ensure everyone can take part confidently and safely. These sessions are ideal for groups who want a fully organised experience and expert guidance throughout.

Instructor-led activities often include:

  • Target sports such as archery or air rifles

  • Climbing and challenge activities

  • Team challenges and adventure activities

These sessions help build confidence, develop new skills, and ensure everyone gets the most from the experience.

Self-Led Activities

Self-led activities allow group leaders to run activities independently using our facilities and activity areas.

This option provides flexibility for groups who want to structure their own programme, run activities at their own pace, or include more relaxed exploration of the site.

Self-led activities often include:

  • Orienteering and nature exploration

  • Bushcraft and outdoor skills

  • Team games and group challenges

Leaders are responsible for supervising their group and running the activity themselves.

Choosing the Right Option

Many groups choose to combine both options during their visit – enjoying the expertise of our instructors for specialist activities while also making time for self-led activities and free exploration.

Our team is always happy to help you plan the best programme for your group.
