🧗 Traverse Wall
Test Your Balance & Climbing Skills
Traverse Wall sessions at Frylands Wood take place on our purpose-built traverse wall, located between the U18 toilets and the Crew Hut.
Unlike traditional climbing, traversing focuses on moving sideways across the wall rather than climbing upwards.
The challenge is all about balance, coordination and technique rather than height.
Our traverse wall features:
- 4 climbing sides
- 5 routes of varying difficulty
- A continuous loop design for longer climbing challenges
Participants wear Petzl Panga helmets during the activity. Information about this equipment can be found in the equipment bag.

A Fun Climbing Challenge
Traversing helps participants develop:
- Balance and coordination
- Climbing technique and movement skills
- Confidence and perseverance
- Focus and problem-solving abilities
The different routes allow participants to challenge themselves at their own pace.
Self-Led Activity
Traverse Wall sessions are usually run as a self-led activity, allowing groups to supervise and manage the activity themselves.
Before starting the session, group leaders must:
- Read, understand and sign the relevant Conditions of Use documentation
- Ensure participants are supervised appropriately
- Manage participant behaviour throughout the session
- Ensure the activity is carried out safely at all times
Safety & Requirements
- Minimum age: 5+
- Recommended age: 5+
The Traverse Wall is a great introduction to climbing and works well for schools, scouts, guides and youth groups.
