🌿 Shelter Building

Build Your Own Woodland Shelter

Shelter Building sessions at Frylands Wood take place on WH1, behind the Fort, and give participants the chance to learn practical outdoor survival and teamwork skills in a woodland environment.

Using natural materials gathered from the surrounding area, groups work together to design and build their own shelters.
Tarps and ropes can also be included if requested, allowing groups to create larger or more advanced structures.

Instructor-Led Sessions

When led by a Frylands Wood instructor, sessions are designed to help participants understand different shelter designs and how to construct them safely and effectively.

Sessions typically include:

  • Introduction to different types of shelters
  • Understanding natural materials and construction techniques
  • Team planning and building challenges
  • Practical hands-on shelter construction

Our instructors ensure the activity is delivered safely while encouraging teamwork, creativity and problem-solving throughout the session.

We ask group leaders to support by helping manage participant behaviour during the activity.

Self-Led Sessions

Groups may also run Shelter Building as a self-led activity.

Before starting the session, group leaders must:

  • Read, understand and sign the relevant Conditions of Use documentation
  • Ensure participants are supervised appropriately
  • Manage participant behaviour throughout the session
  • Ensure the activity is carried out safely at all times
